Inspira-chignon: A Hair and Makeup Love Affair

In wedding planning, one of my favorite things to think about is what my overall look as a bride will be. Will I choose to be a classic princess or a vintage vixen? Or will I decide to go a more casual route with a beautiful bohemian look? Many brides will keep in mind the theme for their wedding and consider other parts if their wedding such as their venue, their style, and what they want the overall feel of their wedding to be in choosing their wedding day digs. In the meantime, I've put together a collection of some of the more popular looks along with some of my personal favorites. Enjoy!

Most brides, I've found, on their wedding day prefer that classic bridal look. For the hair, a lovely chignon (bun), long and loose waves, half-up half-down, or even a soft side pony. For the makeup, many brides will like to keep it simple with a touch of eyeliner and a neutral lipstick. Another form of the popular traditional bridal look can have a jazzier feel with a smoldering smokey eye and a bold lip color. A great quality of the traditional look is that it will coordinate with pretty much any dress style you choose!

Vintage and Retro

Another popular look that happens to be all over Pinterest is that vintage and retro look. Some brides dream of looking like Veronica Lake, Marilyn Monroe, or another stunning pin-up model from years past. A vintage or retro look for your wedding day will make you feel like a star on the silver screen and add a touch of glam! Be dramatic with this look by adding sky high pin curls or creating long voluminous waves. Your makeup choice of course will depend on your own personal style, but the vintage/retro looks all have two things in common; edgy winged eyeliner and a bold lip color. Red is always a great choice!

Boho Chic

Another one of my favorite wedding looks is boho chic. A lot of times with a boho look, the makeup will be simpler with a neutral shadow, a touch of liner and a fair amount of mascara. There are so many things you can do with this look and it's all about the intricate and maybe girly details! Flowers, crowns, and ornate clips will all add unique touches to your boho chic wedding look. Style-wise, long loose curls are always a good choice or choose a messy, but planned messy bun!

Marrakech Metallics

While perusing Pinterest with a co-worker earlier this week, I came across a photo of a courtyard in Marrakech, Morocco. I was blown away by how beautiful and ornate the mosaics were, as well as how the artists were able to incorporate a plethora of colors into such a complicated design. Morocco, known for their colorful culture, as well as their ornate architecture, is a fantastic country to draw inspiration from for both summer and winter weddings.

The image that initially blew me away earlier this week while browsing Pinterest.

For winter weddings, I would suggest the following: Pantone’s Color of the Year, Radiant Orchid, accented by a metallic gold or silver. Orchid is a very bold and regal color, the richness a perfect fit for a wintery wedding. However, purple tones can be tough to pair with another color. Orange hues may stand out too much, and the wrong shade of green can be a massive visual turn-off. This is why metallic accents are such a great match for any deep winter color: they’re a neutral color that can make a statement.

Radiant Orchid, accent by gold. Middle image features the Genoa (left) and Turin (right) bridesmaids gowns from Watters Maids Fall 2014 Collection.

For summer weddings, teal and gold can be very classy, as well as exotic! But if you’re going to incorporate bold and exotic colors into your wedding, be sure to go all out! Your colors should be seen everywhere, they are a visual statement and one that should blow your guests away. Having only small splashes of color can leave your reception hall or venue feeling barren and plain. Don’t be afraid to go a little crazy!

Teal and light blue with gold accents.

If there is anything you should take away Moroccan art it is that you can get complicated with design and color without things looking cluttered or gaudy.  At the end of the day, the most important part about selecting your wedding colors is that they reflect who you and your fiancé are as a couple, as one person. I should hope it’s a reflection and a statement you make loudly!

Offbeat Sweets

Are you in the middle of planning your wedding and getting ready to dive into dessert shopping? Our post today might help point you in the right direction! We've put together four sweet, savory, and some slightly eccentric Portland options for you to check out.

First up, traditional and beautiful wedding cakes take form at Dream Cakes Bakery in SE Portland. Experts in creating the most realistic and beautiful sugarpaste flowers, Dream Cakes seems to specialize and excel in creating whimsical floral cakes. Their attention to detail really stands out with their fondant accents and intricate icing designs. They also love using beautiful and colorful fresh flowers on their cakes!

Not only are the cakes easy on the eyes, but they seem like they'd be pretty easy on the taste buds as well! Their long list of cake flavors includes, but is certainly not limited to, gingerbread, hazelnut, dark chocolate, and my personal favorite, red velvet. They also serve up a great selection of fillings, frostings, fruit, and liqueur. Check out the full gallery of their cakes here and visit Dream Cakes' website for all inquiries. A couple other perks about Dream Cakes is that they are a 3 time winner of Oregon Bride & Groom best wedding cake and winner of Wedding Wire's Choice for 2013.

Our next two stops are off the beaten path for wedding desserts. A very popular trend that has been taking weddings by storm is NOT having a cake and opting for something a little less traditional like cupcakes or doughnuts. Luckily, Portland has a number of fantastic choices for offbeat brides!

For cupcakes, you have to check out Cupcake Jones. Located in NW Portland, this custom cupcakery, if you will, will cater to your wedding needs by consulting with you and creating the perfect cupcakes for your event. They have a plethora of flavors to choose from and will make sure that your cupcakes are a dessert display to remember. Now, the great thing about Cupcake Jones is that they offer jumbo and mini options and can also make their tasty treats vegan and gluten free! Here are some excellent examples of their work!

For more info on Cupcake Jones visit their website. Also be sure to check out their daily specials!

As for Doughnuts, I bet you didn't know that the Portland staple Voodoo Doughnut does weddings! Voodoo Doughnut basically exists to bring your doughnut dreams to life, so why not make them your go-to for your wedding dessert display? According to their website you can order off their menu or work with them to create the perfect spread for your wedding. Another fun fact is that you can also actually have your wedding AT Voodoo! Check out their  website and get Voodoo involved in your wedding today!

Our final delicious stop for the day is at probably one of the most unique bakeries I've come by in a while. The Artisan Cake Company, located in Beaverton, creates completely customized cake designs and has a wide price range to fit your needs. They do everything from simple, one layer cakes to artful 3D designs. From the pictures on their website, it seems like this bakery can pretty much create the wedding cake of your dreams; all you need is an idea!

Check out all of their galleries on their website to see what this bakery is really made of!

Bohemian Braids

These days it’s not uncommon to see brides breaking the barrier of formal traditional weddings, and seeking the soft intimate vibe a bohemian or rustic wedding can offer. For our Hayley Paige or Claire bride (See photos A and B) we recommend styling your hair in a soft side swept braid or taking a more romantic approach to the milk-maid braid by accenting your hair with baby’s breath or other ornamental flowers. You can even incorporate a flower crown into your hair; see images C and D.

Dressing your wedding: Finding the perfect theme

One aspect of wedding planning that can often be overlooked is choosing a theme. Choosing a theme for your wedding is always a great idea because it is a fun and exciting way to showcase both you and your fiancé’s personalities to your guests. Choosing a theme is also a very helpful tool in planning your ceremony and your reception. It can be as simple as saying “I want something rustic and romantic.” Putting your theme into words will allow you to bring your vision to life and give your guests a party to remember! Below we've put together some great collages of our favorite and a few of the most popular wedding themes that we hear our brides talking about!

Get Ready For a Sample Sale at AniA

Having trouble picking out your wedding colors? Let Pantone help you out!

Pantone's color of the year for 2014 is Radiant Orchid and we couldn't be more thrilled about it! Not only does the color live up to it's name but it is versatile and and transcends the changing of the seasons. Radiant Orchid can also be easily paired with any of the color choices you see above.

For Spring, pair Radiant Orchid with the serene Placid Blue and rustic Sand. The cool and serene Placid Blue and neutral Sand compliment and bring out the deeper tones in Radiant Orchid, giving your wedding an amazing pop of color! Dress your bridesmaids in Radiant Orchid chiffon dresses and then jazz it up with Sand high-heeled kicks. For your flowers, orchids of course! Add touches of the Placid Blue and Sand in your bouquets and table decorations and you'll be the talk of the spring wedding season!

Now, summer weddings call for vivacious brights and warm tones all around. Play around with Pantone's colors and make bold choices!

Pair Radiant Orchid with Dazzling Blue and add a dash of spice with with Cayenne.

Or keep it hot and Combine Radiant Orchid with Freesia, Celosia Orange, and Cayenne.
